It’s never too late to start a recording career. Just ask 83-year-old Leo “Bud” Welch. His first record came out in 2013, decades after he first picked up a guitar in 1945. For blues fans, it’s been worth the wait. He made Rolling Stone magazine’s 2015 list of 10 New Artists You Need to Know and for good reason. His first record, Sabougla Voices, is a gritty, electric gospel outing that is typical of how Welch has spent his musical time – raising spirits in the Sabougla Baptist Church. His next outing, however, is straight-up electric blues. I Don’t Prefer No Blues is pulsating with his visceral guitar work and growling vocals. If you like your blues á la Mississippi Fred McDowell or Junior Kimbrough, this is it. This is real blues straight from rural Mississippi to the mountains.
