Phil Cook has a message for you- Keep love alive. His latest record, “People Are My Drug,” is a tour de force, delivering rootsy songs of hope and love and positivity. No one, this record states, is alone in this world. We’re all in it together. What a message! It practically lived on the turntable at Telluride Music Company for weeks on end and made many a music fan’s best-of list for 2018. In making the record, he kept close the influences of John Prine and Mavis Staples and it’s evident in the folk-gospel sounds that pour from the speakers into your heart. If his solo work is impressive, consider his work with Megafaun, Deyarmond Edison and Hiss Golden Messenger. Each is a family collective of sorts; a community of people that make music that is food for the soul. He’s a musical heavyweight with a smile that can part the clouds. Shine on!
