Charles Bradley’s voice is power and beauty. His voice tells a thousand stories in a single note. It is a voice that has paid its dues. It exemplifies soul. It’s hard to believe Bradley’s bruising journey from the mean streets to the stage, but it speaks to the grit and resilience of the man who bounced from job to job, state by state until he was discovered and signed to Daptone Records (home of the Menahan Street Band and Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings).
His first record for Daptone, No Time For Dreaming, and the numerous big-stage performances that followed (Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, etc.) made Bradley the star he deserved to be. His follow-up recording, Victim of Love, is an edgier, psychedelic soul outing that explores themes of love, hope and redemption. Bradley, better than most, knows that, “When the world gives you love, it frees your soul.”
