Blood is thicker than water. Just remember that when you think brothers Chris and Rich Robinson are calling it quits with The Black Crowes. The brothers have called time-out from performing and recording together periodically in the course of the durable blues-rock band’s history, but have used the time apart to their great, mutual advantage. Solo projects keep both of their creative fires stoked and when they inevitably rejoin, they often share material and bandmates. We – the fans of the Crowes’ earthy, passionate, Southern-steeped freak and roll – win.
The brothers Robinson have assembled a mighty band for this year’s Lay Down With Number 13 tour. In addition to Chris Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), and Rich Robinson (guitar, vocals), they’ll have Steve Gorman on drums, and longtime bassist Sven Pipien will be on board. TBB regulars will remember keyboardist Adam MacDougall’s out-of-his-skull playing during his performance with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood in 2012, and will be delighted to welcome back another Telluride favorite, Jackie Greene (TBB 2009) on guitar and vocals.
And if that’s not enough, there’s a new release on vinyl. The live Wiser for the Time is packed with 26 songs (15 acoustic and 11 electric) from the band’s five-night, sold-out NYC performances in 2010.
