This guy is a genius. With 88 keys and a wild and curious imagination, Marco Benevento has created a keyboard style that is all his own, using sound shaping tricks and sheer talent. It would be easy to classify his music as progressive jazz, but that just scratches the surface of his work. The man who had his Berklee College of Music degree handed to him by none other than David Bowie has performed in his own collectives – Benevento-Russo Duo, Garage A Trois – as well as Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Bustle In Your Hedgerow, a band that performs fresh interpretations of Led Zeppelin’s music. He’s toured with Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, raises his own chickens, founded his own studio, Fred Short in upstate New York, and a bathroom stall at the Belly Up in Aspen bears a plaque in his honor. His debut solo album, Invisible Baby, is being reissued this year to commemorate its 10th anniversary, on vinyl as colorful and unusual as the music that pours from his mind. And now for something completely different.
